Proposition 36 is “Three Strikes 2.0”, imposing harsher penalties for repeat offenses, disproportionately harming Black, Brown, and poor communities.

Over the next 10 years, Prop 36 would:

  • Remove $750 million in funding from successful drug treatment and homelessness prevention programs
  • Take away $300 million from services for survivors of crime
  • Reduce $10 million from school-based violence prevention programs
  • Impose new penalties for drug use and increase penalties for other offenses, including petty theft, sending 1.5 million more people to state prisons and 100,000 more to California jails
