Please save the date and join us as we celebrate Initiate Justice’s 10-Year Anniversary!
For the past decade, Initiate Justice has worked to affirm a simple but transformative truth: people who are incarcerated are not defined by the systems that confine them. They are leaders, organizers, advocates, family members, and essential voices in the movement for change.
Our work has centered on recognizing that power already exists inside prisons and investing in the tools, political education, relationships, and opportunities that allow directly impacted people to strengthen that power. By building leadership on both sides of prison walls, we have helped create pathways for incarcerated and formerly incarcerated people to shape policy, organize their communities, and lead the fight toward a world beyond incarceration.
This anniversary is an opportunity to honor the people who have built this movement, reflect on a decade of collective impact, and celebrate the community and leadership that will carry this work forward.
We hope you’ll save the date and join us for an afternoon of reflection, community, and celebration.

For 10 years, we have worked alongside people directly impacted by incarceration to turn lived experience into collective power. From passing transformative policies and developing hundreds of impacted leaders to reaching tens of thousands of people inside prisons, our work has helped build a stronger movement for freedom across California. These numbers reflect more than milestones. They represent people organizing, leading, learning, and shaping what justice can look like.
Over the last 10 years, Initiate Justice has helped advance 19 laws to end extreme sentencing, transform prison conditions, expand voting rights, and reduce incarceration. We bring directly impacted voices into the Capitol to shape policy and challenge legislation that causes harm.
More than 800 impacted leaders inside and outside of prison have participated in our Institute of Impacted Leaders and inside organizing programs, building the skills, relationships, and power to lead change in their communities.
Our Inside Journal has reached more than 63,000 people incarcerated in California state prisons, connecting people inside with political education, organizing resources, movement updates, and opportunities to take action across 20 issues.
Across four seasons, our Abolition Is for Everybody podcast has surpassed 61,000 listens, making abolitionist ideas, history, and organizing accessible to audiences inside and outside the movement.
We have hosted 23 cohorts of the Institute of Impacted Leaders, investing in directly impacted people to strengthen their leadership, deepen their political education, and build the next generation of movement leaders.
Our mission is to end incarceration by activating the power of the people it directly impacts.
