Centering Incarcerated Voices
Letters from the inside

Letters from the Inside is a window into the hearts, hopes, and truths of our incarcerated community members. Each handwritten note is a powerful act of self-expression—sharing stories, reflections, and dreams that too often go unheard. By reading these letters, you’re not just witnessing someone’s words; you’re honoring their humanity, amplifying their voice, and standing in solidarity with their journey. These are real people, with real lives, reminding us that connection can transcend walls and bars.

Letters have been edited to remove names, locations, and other sensitive information to help keep our incarcerated members safe. Transcriptions appear as close to the written letters as possible. Any adjustments are made for the purpose of legibility.

"Now we get 2 hot meals with a sack lunch that hardly keeps you from being hungry."

Hi, I would like to request for a proposal to increase food portions in prisons. Prisons used to serve 3 hot meals.

“My 2nd win in prison is being able to read.”

Today 22nd of June, I received the May 2023 “Inside Journal” letter. I’m writing in response to the “Wellness Corner ”, write 3 wins I’ve had while in prison.

"I was more scared than feeling happy.”

Well, to shared with you the happy and scary feelings I experienced through the hearing and especially when the board panel said that they founded me suitable and granted for release.

"...hope for a future beyond these walls.”

This will be my first chance at getting a date

after serving 24 years. I’ve been incarcerated since the age of 17 and finally having a chance to get out is a big deal.
